Periodontal disease is inflammation of the tissues, which support
the teeth and attaches them to the jaw. Where inflammation only
involves the soft tissue, the gums, the disease is called gingivitis.
Where inflammation reaches the bone, it is called periodontitis.
With our screening procedure, our dentist checks if you have
some areas of inflammation with pocket depths around some of
your teeth. A pocket is a space between your gum and your tooth.
Anything over the depth of 3mm in the presence of inflammation
is a diseased condition. It may be accompanied by bleeding gums,
plaque, tartar and bad breath.
The programme is carried out by our dental hygienist. The
cost of home care cleaning aids and therapeutic agents are
included as part of the treatment, because they are necessary
for your success. This is the part of our commitment to excellence.
For pocket depths of 3mm or more
The programme requires at least 3 visits - spread over 2-3
months. Early treatment of gingivitis can reverse the disease
process. If the disease is allowed to continue then the damage
is irreversible leading to bone loss, loosening of the teeth
and eventually loss of teeth. The purpose of the programme
is to:
- Involve you because the success can only be determined
by you.
- Stop the disease process and prevent it from going any
further.
- Keet the treatment as painless as possible.
For pocket depths of 4mm or more
The programme requires at least 4-5 visits - spread over 2-3
months. Early treatment of early periodontitis can reverse
the disease process. If the disease is allowed to continue
then the damage is irreversible leading to bone loss, loosening
of the teeth and eventually loss of teeth. The purpose of
the programme is to:
- Involve you because the success can only be determined
by you.
- Stop the disease process and prevent it from going any
further.
- Keet the treatment as painless as possible.
For pocket depths of 5mm or more
The programme requires at least 6 visits - spread over 3-4
months. Treatment of chronic periodontitis can stabilize the
disease process. If the disease process is allowed to continue
then the damage is irreversible leading to bone loss, loosening
of the teeth and eventually loss of teeth. The purpose of
the programme is to:
- Involve you because the success can only be determined
by you.
- Slow down the disease process and prevent it from going
any further.
- To stabilize teeth that are already diseased.
- In some cases to prepare for referral to specialist clinic.
- Keet the treatment as painless as possible.
