Basic Explanation Of Ozone

In many cases, we can now treat decay and sensitivity in your teeth with a simply, totally painless application of ozone, which takes about 20 seconds.

Following this the decay process in your tooth is arrested and the tooth heals totaly naturally over a timescale of 14 weeks. Furthermore the bacteria, which cause tooth decay, are totally eliminated from the area treated for this 14-week period. This is an exciting and revolutionary development in dentistry and is now available at our practice.

What Is Ozone?

Ozone is our natural protection against harmful sunlight, it is all around us and is present in the air that we breathe. Ozone is a clean, fresh smelling gas that you can find at high altitudes.

What Can Ozone Do For Me?

Ozone is used in hospitals and public places to control infections and smells. It is also used to purify the water that we drink. Ozone kills bacteria, fungi and viruses within 5 seconds. It works by breaking up the cell walls of bacteria, viruses or fungi, and breaks up sulphur compounds into non-smelling compounds.

How Can It Help My Teeth?

We use a small laser called DIAGNOdent, so that we can look inside the surface of your teeth. DIAGNOdent detects the areas of bacteria that cause decay; this allows us to assess how much decay is present. Ozone kills the bacteria that cause decay. Decay is caused by acid producing bacteria that grow out of control.

What Is The Procedure?

A special hand piece is used to put ozone onto the decayed area. The procedure is simple and painless.

There is no drilling, injections pain or damage to teeth. We may give you a special tooth paste and mouth rinse to promote the healing of the tooth's treatment.

We may also use a provisional restoration (Fuji 7), this also aids in the remineralising of the tooth. These products contain all the essential minerals that your body needs to repair the decayed area.

How Will I Know It Has Worked?

We may ask you to come back to check your laser readings and clinical appearance. The research shows that in 90% of cases, the decay has either stopped or has reversed. We may re-do the ozone at this appointment if needed.

Do I Feel Anything?

No! The whole process of the laser readings, the application of ozone and the application of Fuji 7 restoration to your tooth, are painless. It does not involve any damage to your tooth or gum tissue.

What Are The Alternatives?

Your alternatives to ozone are traditional treatments that we may have offered you in the past. Fillings using injection and the drill involve drilling away the decay and the tooth. A filling is then put in to stop up the damaged area. These fillings usually need replacing after 5 to 10 years. If you have no treatment on the decayed tooth it will cause further decay and pain, this may result in the tooth being removed.

The Healozone treatment represents a considerable investment for our practice, however the potential of this treatment (both at present and in future) is huge. Our aim is always to provide the most effective and up to date treatments currently available. In the use of the Healozone unit we feel that we have a real chance of changing the way your dental treatment is provided and dramatically reducing the number of fillings required with a simple, quick and totally painless procedure! If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to speak to us about this advance.
